What hydraulic specifications do your implements require?

Correct hydraulic specification ensures implements operate safely at full capacity without overloading your tractor's system. Key factors are flow rate, operating pressure, the number of spool valves and the coupler standard.

Standard hydraulic requirements

  • Flow rate: 30-60 L/min for most mounted and trailed implements
  • Operating pressure: 180-210 bar (typical tractor standard)
  • Spool valves: 1-3 double-acting spools depending on function
  • Couplers: ISO 7241-1 Series A (1/2") flat-face or standard quick-release
  • Return line: low-pressure free return required for some motor-driven units

We supply adapters and hose kits where needed. For load-sensing or closed-centre systems, please confirm your tractor model. Contact our team at info@agritrend.co.uk for compatibility advice.

Maintenance & Care

Keep your tractors, sprayers, harvesters and implements running at peak efficiency. Our Maintenance & Care guides cover everything from daily pre-use checks and service intervals to winter storage and rust prevention — written by our in-house service engineers with decades of hands-on UK farming experience.

How often should I service my farm equipment?

Sticking to manufacturer-recommended service intervals protects your warranty, prevents costly breakdowns during critical windows and maximises resale value. Intervals are typically measured in engine hours rather than calendar time.

Equipment typeMinor serviceMajor service
TractorsEvery 250 hrsEvery 1,000 hrs or annually
Combine harvestersEvery 100 hrsPre-season & post-season
SprayersEvery 50 hrsAnnual NSTS + 250 hrs
TelehandlersEvery 500 hrsEvery 1,000 hrs + LOLER
BalersEvery 5,000 balesPre-season check

What a major service includes

  • Fluids: Engine oil, hydraulic oil, transmission fluid, coolant and all filters
  • Drivetrain: Inspect clutch, gearbox and axles, check for wear
  • Electrics: Battery health test, alternator output, wiring loom inspection
  • Safety: Brakes, ROPS integrity, lights and road-legal compliance

We offer fixed-price servicing and farm-visit call-outs across the UK. Contact our service team to book.

How should I maintain my crop sprayer for reliable performance?

A well-maintained crop sprayer delivers accurate application rates, protects your investment and keeps you compliant with NSTS inspection requirements. Follow this routine to keep yours in peak condition throughout the spraying season.

Daily pre-use checks

  • Tank & filters: Rinse tank, clean suction and pressure filters, inspect for residue
  • Nozzles: Check flow rate, spray pattern and wear — replace any nozzle >10% over spec
  • Hoses & fittings: Inspect for cracks, kinks or leaks under pressure
  • Pressure gauge: Verify calibration against a known reference

End-of-day routine

  • Triple rinse: Flush tank, boom and lines with clean water (add tank cleaner if switching chemistry)
  • Drain lines: Open drains to prevent crystallisation and freezing
  • Nozzle storage: Remove, clean in warm soapy water, store dry
IntervalTask
50 hoursGrease boom pivots, check pump oil level
250 hoursReplace pump diaphragms, inspect regulator valve
AnnualNSTS test, full calibration, replace all filters

Our service engineers are NSTS-qualified and can carry out inspections at your farm. Contact our service team.

Which lubricants and oils should I use in my machinery?

Using the correct lubricant grade is one of the simplest ways to extend equipment life. Always check your operator manual first, but the following are the industry-standard specifications for most modern agricultural machinery.

ApplicationRecommended grade
Diesel engine oilSAE 10W-40 or 15W-40, API CJ-4/CK-4
Hydraulic systemISO VG 46 (or VG 68 in hot conditions)
Transmission / UTTOUniversal Tractor Transmission Oil to JDM J20C
Wheel bearings / pivotsEP2 lithium complex grease, NLGI-2
PTO shaftsMoly-fortified EP grease
Gearboxes (final drive)SAE 80W-90 GL-5

Best practice

  • Never mix grades: Different additive packs can react and reduce performance
  • Clean before greasing: Wipe nipples to avoid pushing grit into bearings
  • Warm oil drains better: Run the machine briefly before an oil change
  • Dispose responsibly: Used oil must go to a licensed waste carrier under UK regulations

We stock a full range of branded lubricants and can deliver bulk orders. Contact our service team for advice.

How do I prepare and store equipment over winter?

Proper winter storage prevents corrosion, rodent damage and rubber degradation — common causes of expensive springtime repairs. Set aside half a day per machine to do the job properly.

Before you park up

  • Wash thoroughly: Remove all mud, crop residue and chemical traces, then dry completely
  • Change fluids: Fresh engine oil and filter prevent acid build-up during layup
  • Fuel stabiliser: Fill the tank (reduces condensation) and add a diesel biocide
  • Grease everything: Pump fresh EP2 grease into every nipple to displace moisture
  • Coolant check: Ensure antifreeze protects to at least -25 degrees C

During storage

  • Battery: Remove and trickle-charge monthly, or fit a smart maintainer
  • Tyres: Inflate to maximum pressure or block up axles to prevent flat spots
  • Openings: Block exhaust and air intake to keep rodents out
  • Hydraulic rams: Retract fully to protect exposed chrome from rusting
  • Belts & rubber: Release tension on belts where possible

Ideally store undercover on a dry, well-ventilated concrete pad. Contact our service team for a pre-storage inspection.

How do I prevent rust on my farm equipment?

Rust is the biggest enemy of farm equipment resale value. A consistent cleaning and protection routine will keep panels, frames and implements looking good and working reliably for decades.

Weekly prevention

  • Pressure wash: Remove soil, slurry and fertiliser residue — these hold moisture against steel
  • Dry off: Use compressed air on joints and crevices, especially after washing
  • Touch up chips: Dab paint chips with matching primer and topcoat straight away

Seasonal protection

  • Cavity wax: Spray inside chassis sections and box-frame implements
  • Lanolin spray: Natural, food-safe rust inhibitor for exposed linkages
  • Anti-corrosion grease: Coat bright-metal surfaces such as ram chrome and PTO splines
  • Underbody seal: Renew every couple of years on road-going equipment

Already rusty? Treat it

  • Wire brush: Remove loose scale down to sound metal
  • Rust converter: Phosphoric acid-based products neutralise remaining oxide
  • Prime & paint: Zinc-rich primer followed by two topcoats

We supply rust-treatment kits and can arrange professional refurbishment. Contact our service team.
